Is a Betting Office the Same as a Betting Shop?

Yes. Betting office is the older legal name for a betting shop. Section 9 of the Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Act 1963 licensed a bookmaker’s premises with a “betting office licence”. Under section 150 of the Gambling Act 2005 the same shop holds a betting premises licence, and every one of the 6,200 shops in this directory holds one. Bookmakers and bookies are the same premises again.
